(grid reference SO 371612 - nearby postcode LD8 2HS)
Byton was a small settlement held by the Mortimers of Richards Castle during the thirteenth century. The original church has now gone, being replaced by a small Victorian building next to the site of the castle in the now almost extinct medieval hamlet. An ancient tympanum depicting a lamb and cross between Celtic knots survives from the early era built into the south wall.
