Since 2016 the Mortimer History Society has been awarding

The MHS Essay Prize

First Prize £750, runner-up prize £300, third place £200
The closing date for the 2023 Essay Prize is 1st March 2024

Essays are accepted on any aspect of

  • the history, geopolitics, topography, laws, economy, society and culture of medieval borderlands including comparative studies, between 1066 and 1542, or
  • the history of the medieval Mortimer family of Wigmore (and its cadet branches, eg Chirk, Chelmarsh) and its impact on the history and culture of the British Isles

The essay must contain original research not previously published elsewhere, and the prize is open to everyone who can meet the assessment criteria.

Prizewinning essays will be published
in the MHS Journal as may other
commended entries.
