A detectorist called Lisa Gravett recently discovered this horse ornament
in Winterbourne Steepleton in East Dorset.
We're grateful to Lisa for drawing it to our attention and for supplying this image

In the 14th century, Winterbourne Steepleton was held by the Devereux family
as tenants of the Roger Mortimer 4th Earl of March (d.1398)
and the manor is listed in his inquisition post mortem (IPM).
Although it is possible that it might have dropped from the earl's own horse,
it is much more likely to have been a member of the earl's household
or affinity who was visiting his remote manor.
