The Lecture: ‘No religious purpose whatever?’ Another look at the smaller
religious houses of the Welsh March

Janet Burton: Medieval monasteries varied considerably in size and wealth, but small communities have generally received a bad press. The quotation in my title is taken from Knowles’s discussion of the dependent priories of continental monasteries founded in both England and Wales in the years after the Norman Conquest, but it reflects the general suspicion that is evident in his works of the role and purpose of small houses. This lecture analyses such attitudes and traces their origins and argues for a different approach to this historical problem.

Our Speaker

Janet Burton is Professor Emerita at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, where she continues to supervise research students and teach on the MA in Medieval Studies. She and Dr Karen Stöber are the directors of the Monastic Wales project and general editors of the journal Medieval Monastic Studies (published by Brepols). She has published extensively on many aspects of monastic history.
