The Lecture: ‘King Henry III and Wales: co-existence rather than conquest’

In this talk David Carpenter explores the sharp contrast between Henry III’s policies in Wales and those of his son, Edward I. Under Edward there was conquest, under Henry co-existence. Henry’s campaigns in Wales were limited in their objectives and very much last resorts. In 1267, in the Treaty of Montgomery, Henry recognised Llywelyn ap Gruffudd as prince of Wales. In his conclusion, Carpenter asks whether the 1267 settlement offered a viable future for Wales.
