Cearnarfon castle built by Edward I from around 1284

In 1093, Rhys ap Tewdwr, King of Deheubarth died fighting against the Normans near Brecon. His death paved the way for the Norman conquest of South-West Wales

Pembroke Castle was fortified following the Norman conquest of Deheubarth in 1093 but it owes its impressive appearance to William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke (c1246-1219)

The arms of Valence. William and Aymer de Valence were successively Earls of Pembroke between 1247 and 1324.
